You know the feeling.
You hit a hard session, wake up the next day, and your legs feel like you’ve just done a triathlon barefoot. Sitting down is a mission. Walking downstairs? Forget about it. But is that soreness normal? Is it a sign of progress — or something else?
That kind of deep, next-day stiffness? That’s DOMS — Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness. It’s common. It’s uncomfortable. And I’ve had it ruin entire training blocks if I didn’t manage it right.
Let’s break it down.
So... What Is DOMS?
DOMS is the soreness and stiffness you feel 24–72 hours after a new or intense workout. It’s caused by microscopic damage to your muscle fibres — especially during eccentric movements (like lowering a squat, or absorbing force in sprinting or paddling).
When I was preparing for World Championships in kayaking, we’d load our gym sessions with eccentric work: heavy pull-ups, tempo squats. It built power, sure — but DOMS would leave me unable to paddle cleanly for days if I didn’t recover right.
This isn't just elite-level stuff — runners, cyclists, lifters, and anyone pushing past their comfort zone will feel it.
How Long Does It Last?
-
Starts: 6–12 hours after exercise
-
Peaks: Around 48 hours
-
Resolves: Within 3–5 days
DOMS lingers longer if you're low on sleep, hydration, or recovery support.
When Is It NOT Just DOMS?
Look out for:
-
Sharp, stabbing pain
-
Swelling or bruising
-
Pain that gets worse with time
-
Restricted joint movement
DOMS is muscular. If it feels like more than that, take it seriously.
DOMS Isn’t a Problem — Until It Becomes One
The truth? DOMS isn’t a badge of honour. It’s feedback.
How to Recover Smarter
Move Gently
Walks, light mobility or cycling can reduce symptoms faster than full rest.
Use Magnesium & Arnica Balms
Topicals with CBD, arnica, and magnesium help relieve soreness and restore movement.
I started mixing my own balm when nothing else worked. It made a difference — not just in pain relief but how ready I felt to move again the next day.
Contrast Therapy
Hot/cold contrast can reduce inflammation and boost blood flow.
Prioritise Sleep
No supplement outperforms deep sleep. It’s the #1 tool for recovery.
Fuel Right
Protein. Hydration. Electrolytes. What you eat affects how you recover.
🔁 Final Thought
DOMS means your body is adapting — good. But pushing through without recovery? That’s what leads to problems.
You don’t win by suffering more. You win by recovering better.
Stay intentional. Keep moving. Build smart.
